1-8: Congresswoman Gabrielle Giffords is shot along with several other people in Tucson, AZ. Giffords remains in critical condition while several others have died, including a nine year old girl. The 22 year old suspected shooter is in custody.

The last American World War I veteran has died at 110. Frank Buckles, a Missouri native who lied about his age to join the miliary at age 16, died of natural causes at his home in Charlestown, West Virginia, on Sunday Februray 27 2011, his family said in a statement.
Buckles, who drove an ambulance during the war, was one of five million Americans who served in World War I from 1917 to 1918.
According to a report in the Washington Post, with Buckles death, a 109-year-old Australian man and a 110-year-old British woman are believed to be the only living people out of 65 million people to have served in the war, which lasted from 1914 to 1918.
